I started my career as an Army Officer in Corps of Engineers where I did Masters in Structural Engineering. I fell in love with software development when I experienced the amazing power of computers first hand when developing programs to analyze tall buildings and shell roofs under seismic and wind loads. Soon I moved over to software engineering as my full time career.
My early years were spent doing programming in FORTRAN and COBOL on IBM mainframes. My first stint as an Entrepreneur was in Dubai where I developed and implemented custom accounting software for mid sized companies using Unix, C and Oracle; I then joined Nortel in their Head Office in Canada as Oracle DBA and soon became a manager for the database group. My tenure in Nortel laid the foundations for my understanding of data administration and scalability.
An opportunity with Wells Fargo (Wholesale) brought me to the Bay Area. I played a key role in the march of Wells Fargo into the Unix and Oracle world, as well as outsourcing. I was also member of the first team in Wells to work on Internet. My tenure with Wells gave me good experience in developing large applications with a globally dispersed team.
I entered the startup world when Bill Fisher, a former EVP of Wells Fargo and Vice Chairman of ANZ Grindlays of Australia, offered me to join him as co-founder and CTO of Getsmart, which pioneered comparison shopping for mortgages on Internet. This is where I first learnt how to lead technology in a startup. Getsmart was acquired by Providian.
The urge to become an entrepreneur was pretty strong by this time and my daughter Reena had just graduated with MBA from Harvard. We both started Done.com and built an award winning product for online and wireless collaboration, but the company didnt survive the bursting of Internet bubble in 1999. Reena and I then built JobFlash, the first speech recognition based, fully automated and bilingual recruiting solutions for hourly workers. JobFlash was acquired by Taleo.
I then joined Pageflakes to head their technology for a year before founding CareerHero with my wonderful daughter and partner Reena. I am passionate about CareerHero because it gives me the opportunity to help next generation take a more informed decision when choosing their career and finding their first job.
